Biography
David H. Sochart MB ChB, FRCS (Edin.), FRCS (Tr.&Orth.), MD Consultant Lower Limb Arthroplasty Surgeon Director of the Outcomes and Research Department Director of the Academic Surgical Unit South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC)
Born and educated in Glasgow and graduated in Medicine at the University of Aberdeen. Pre-fellowship training was in the West of Scotland and Higher Surgical Training in the NorthWest of England, with Arthroplasty Fellowships at the Centre for Hip Surgery, Wrightington, and the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham. I have held Consultant posts in Edinburgh, Manchester and London, as well as previous roles as Chairman of the Ramsey private Hospital in Manchetser, Foundation Programme Director for the Northern Care Alliance and Chairman of the British Medical Association for Manchester and Salford.
Throughout my career I have focussed on lower limb arthroplasty, research and education, with a particular interest in implant development, introduction and monitoring. I was involved in establishing the national arthroplasty registries in both Scotland (SAP) and England (NJR) and currently serve on the Orthopaedic Data Evaluation Panel (ODEP) and the Beyond Compliance committee (BC). I have served on the Executive Committees of the British Orthopaedic Trainees Association (BOTA) and the British Hip Society (BHS) and was a founder member of its Professional Affairs and Equality and Diversity committees and also of the Orthopaedic AI Alliance (ORAIA) in 2025.
The South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC) was founded in 2004 and is one of the largest arthroplasty centres in Europe, with its own database of more than 70,000 arthroplasties. Current research includes the use of Artificial Intelligence, stem cell therapy, day case arthroplasty, implant monitoring and arthroplasty outcomes. We are an exemplar Orthopaedic Centre participating in multicentre clinical and basic science research and National Institute for Health and Care (NIHR) projects, as well as working closely with the Department of Health (DoH) and GIRFT (Getting it Right First Time).
