Biography
Chief Orthopaedic Surgeon, Head of the Orthopaedic Department & Chairman of the Surgical Services, Henry Dunant Medical Center, Athens
Dr. George Macheras completed his Medical Degree at the Aristotelion University of Thessaloniki, and afterwards completed his orthopaedic training at the NIMTS Hospital Athens. Following these studies, he performed several fellowships in Switzerland, Italy and Germany. He further improved his clinical and research skills in the United Kingdom at St. George’s Medical School (St. George’s rotation training scheme in Orthopaedics), before completing a PhD at the University of Athens.
Since his return to Athens, Greece, Dr. Macheras practiced as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and gained vast experience in hip and knee arthroplasty surgery and in revision surgery. Between 2008 and 2021 he served as Senior Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon at the KAT Hospital in Athens, being Head of the Orthopedic Department and Director of Medical Services. Currently he is Chief Orthopaedic Surgeon, Head of the Orthopaedic Department and Chairman of the Surgical Services of Henry Dunant Medical Center in Athens.
He has vast experience in high CDH (hip dysplasia) case surgery and in revision hip and knee surgery (both septic and aseptic cases). He has performed over 5,000 total hip replacements, 3,000 total knee replacements and 1,000 revision surgeries.
Dr. Macheras is a founding member of the European Hip Society and was elected President of the Society (2008–2010), organizing an EHS meeting in 2010 in Athens, where he is also the National Representative. He has had many activities in EFORT: member of the executive committee, chairman of the Specialty Societies, chairman of the EFORT FORA, member of the scientific committee, and member of the editorial board of the EFORT Open Reviews Journal.
He has been an active member of the International Hip Society since 2011. He was a board member of the Hellenic Orthopaedic Association for three years and served as President of the Hellenic Orthopaedic Association in 2014.
He is an active member of the prestigious division of AO, AORecon, since 2014, taking part as international faculty and international chairman in many AORecon meetings all around the world — he has chaired more than 20 such events. He is a member of the advisory board of the ESA committee of AORecon (Europe and South Africa), responsible for faculty selection and course organization in this area, and is responsible for faculty training and evolution in AORecon as a member of the Education Committee. He takes part in many scientific committees nationally and internationally.
He has published 89 papers in international journals (Index Medicus) and 68 in Greek journals. He has written 14 book chapters and delivered 243 podium presentations at international congresses. He has run 20 international clinical trials. He regularly travels to Europe, South America, the Middle East and China, operating, lecturing and performing educational activities. He speaks English and Italian.
